FOSIL (Friends of the Swans Island Lighthouse) is a 501.c.3 tax-exempt non-profit Maine corporation. Its mission is to financially support the Town of Swan’s Island as the Town works to restore, preserve and manage the Swan’s Island Lighthouse and its surroundings at Hockamock Head as a cultural, educational, and recreational resource for Island residents and visitors to Maine’s Down East Coast, to preserve its heritage and foster public understanding of its historical significance.
The Town of Swan’s Island owns and manages the Burnt Coat Harbor Light Station and the adjacent park, working primarily through an appointed Lighthouse Committee.
Town of Swan’s Island Lighthouse Committee
The Town Lighthouse Committee ((TLC) is a volunteer committee that manages the operations of the Burnt Coat Harbor Light on behalf of the Town of Swan’s Island. Operational decisions for the Lighthouse are made through this Committee.
Since 2006, the TLC has overseen the preservation and restoration of the Lighthouse, guided by the Historic Preservation Plan approved and monitored by SHPO. The Town of Swan’s Island, acting through the TLC, is responsible for all the work done at the Lighthouse including opening the house and tower to the public in the summer months and management the buildings and structures and adjacent park and trails.
